Many people think that you can just use any flooring/substrate for a BD.
That is wrong.
A BD needs a good substrate, not a terrible substrate.
In this thread we will go over which substrates to use, and which ones to stay away from.
1: Sand
NO!
Sand is possibly the worst substrate you can get for your BD.
This also includes Calci-Sand.
If you use sand it could get stuck in their vent, which will kill them.
It also could kill them if they eat some food off the ground and pick up some sand with the food.
Then, it would get stuck in their intestines and kill them.
Don't use sand. Period.
2: Linoleum Flooring
Linoleum flooring is very dangerous to your BD.
The heat from your heat lamp bulb will release toxic fumes into your BDs cage and will kill your BD over time.
I still don't understand why you would put this in a BD enclosure, let alone your own house...
3: Synthetic Flooring Pad
These are quite a bit of a step up from sand, but still have their cons.
In my experience, these have been quite hard to clean.
The fecal matter sticks to the small grass like pieces and won't come off unless you use a hose.
I dislike these quite a bit, and wouldn't use them unless you absolutely have to.
4: Excavator Clay
This is a good one.
I haven't used it myself but many people use it for their BD.
It's a much better option than all of the above.
5: Tile
Tile flooring is easily the best flooring you can get for a BD.
It is super simple to clean up, and is relatively inexpensive.
Plus, whenever you have to clean the cage, you can just lift it out of the cage, clean it, then place it back in the cage.
All you have to do is go to your local home improvement store, find a piece of tile you like, make sure it's the right size, and buy it!
Viola! You now have the best flooring/substrate for your BD!
(Don't mix tile up with linoleum flooring. Make sure you buy tile, and not linoleum.)
I hope this helps you when you choose your flooring/substrate!
Thanks,
BDD
